The Great Shark Snapshot Week

24th to 31st July 2022

Take part in the 1st ever Great Shark Snapshot Week!

Join Blue Seas Protection in collaboration with the Shark Trust Great Shark Snapshot Week, as we dive into Sandown Bay on the Isle of Wight UK, searching for the Globally Threatened and Endangered Shark, Skates and Rays that have made the Isle of Wight their home.

Come together and join Citizen Scientist Divers, researchers, community groups and charities from across the world in order to help us record as many sharks, rays and skate sightings as possible in 1 week.  This will gather research data and information about global shark distribution and ultimately help to conserve these beautiful beings.

Shark Trust

The Great Shark Snapshot Week is organised by the Shark Trust.  If you would like to find out more about this conservation charity, please visit the Shark Trust website for more information

Isle of Wight Sharks!

During Shark Snapshot Week, Blue Seas Protection wants to observe sightings of the globally threatened Shark Ray Skate that live around the Isle of Wight.  Over 1800 Shark Ray Skate pups have been hatched around the island since Jan 2022, and we would like to capture images of the pups and hopefully their globally endangered parents:

Thornback Rays

Spotted Rays

Undulate Rays

Blond Rays

Cat Sharks

Hatchling Pups have been sighted around the toes of sea-shore paddling Citizen Scientists around the island and are as large as your hand now!  Join us during Shark Snapshot Week and send us images of your little sharks if you are lucky enough to spot one.  Or if you are fishing and happen to catch one.  We'd love to see your snaps!

Become a Marine Citizen Scientist and upload your Shark Snaps on our SharkLab Facebook page and we will upload them onto the Shark Trust global research database.

Calling all Marine Citizen Scientist Divers!

Blue Seas Protection is teaming up with Marine Citizen Scientist Divers during Shark Snapshot Week, in order to deploy underwater cameras, to observe sharks living in Sandown Bay on the Isle of Wight.  If you are a confident Diver and would like to take part, the dives will be conducted over 4 days in Cowes and is weather dependent.

Briefing, Dive Plan, Boat + Kit Familiarisation:

Sun   24th July 2022 8am - 1pm

Dives:

Mon 25th July 2022 9am - 1pm

Tues 26th July 2022 9am - 1pm

Wed 27th July 2022 9am - 1pm

This is a weather dependent activity and Registration is required due to the limited space.

Divers should have their own diving equipment, air cylinders, pressure gauges and insurance. Divers take part at their own risk and Blue Seas Protection will not be held accountable for incidents outside of their control.  BUT We'd love you to Dive In with us!
